"With language we conceptually divide the world into opposites. Light and dark, hot and cold, good and evil. My goal with this painting was to depict the role of this division in our own suffering as human beings. Perhaps from a broader perspective these opposites can collapse, if there can be no inside without an outside, no life without death, in what meaningful sense do these words actually represent different separate things? The painting depicts this linguistic bifurcation of reality as a literal splitting of the whole world, with the human being in the middle both struggling against and being torn apart by their own nature." - Miles Johnston
